Healthy Living and Juicing

#realjuicereboot joe wicks, body coach juicer

I guess it's safe to say that a lot of January resolutions towards a healthy lifestyle will have been made this year, but my health kick actually began sometime last year. I was fed up of feeling so tired and unhealthy a lot of the time. One of the first things I did was to kick fizzy drinks. I did start drinking more juices and water instead, although I did stop the juices too after realising how much sugar some supermarket ones seem to have. But to be honest water all the time can be boring! So I was really glad I got the chance to try making my own healthy juices using the Phillips Juicer and recipes from the body coach, aka Joe Wicks!

I feel like I've been living under a rock as I hadn't heard of the Body Coach before, yet he was hundreds and thousands of followers on every platform! I'll admit that I don't know much about fitness but his approaches to healthy living, an alternative to dieting, actually sound very interesting!

P.S. I apologise for the terrible pictures, I couldn't get any lighting in my kitchen and I didn't think it was a good idea to use the juicer in my bedroom!

Juicer
First and foremost, the juicer I was sent is the Philips Viva Collection Juicer*. The sleek and functional design of this juicer is miles away from the huge, chunky juicer I remember from my childhood. Not only does it look very aesthetic but they've clearly thought about everything. It has a large feeding tube so you can just go in and pop whole apples and other fruit/vegetables in. The whole pulping process is also built in so there's no bits. You can juice a lot in one go, approximately 2 litres so it's great if you need to squeeze it into a busy lifestyle. They also include a little jug that collects all the juice, but you can also use a glass. Finally, the one thing that used to put me off juicing most often was the cleaning but not anymore! With QuickClean technology the componants are designed to be rinsed in one minute, plus with QuickRinse you can pour water through the juicer (simply by switching it on as normal) and it cleans any residue. Although, I did find doing this make the pulp more sludgy when it came to cleaning it out.

Recipes
The Body Coach has also created recipes for everyday of the week:

  • For Monday we have the Feel Fresh Juice: 2 apples, 2 celery sticks, 1 lemon and 1/2 a cucumber.
  • Thursday's Mr Leanie: 2 carrots, 2 apples and a handful each of coriander and kale.

However, I wanted to share my own which I aptly named Sweet Punch: 2 apples, 1 Clementine and 8 strawberries. I got the most juice from the apples, not so much from the Clementine but the Strawberries added a wonderful bit of colour and sweetness. This was enough to fill a large glass, and the juicer did a great job at taking off the apple skins and any seeds.  Even though it does look frothy there were no bits at all!

When it came to washing it there was a lot of pulp! I think that the idea of wastage can discourage a lot of people off juicing, it can also seem to be quite expensive but I would suggest that instead of going to the supermarkets you can sometimes get really fresh and yummy fruit from local grocers or fruit venders which also works out much cheaper!

Lifestyle
So I'm no expert when it comes to fitness but I do try to implement some small exercises, like walking a bit everyday. One of the most down to earth things I've ever heard is 'why do people pay so much for a gym pass when they get the lift to the 1st/2nd floor!'. You don't need to spend a lot to be active! Even walking to the shops counts. I try to go on the treadmill once a week for half an hour (I'll admit that I do find it so hard to fit in when you're working all week), and then I like to go in with a few youtube fitness videos. My favourites are this 10 minute workout by the Lean Machines and some in this series by XHIT Daily. The best things about these workouts is that you can do them from the privacy of your bedroom and you don't need anything other than youtube.

Overall, I'm really enjoying using this juicer as part of the #RealJuiceReboot as sometimes cooking from scratch isn't possible and with it being Winter I'm also aware that I might not be eating all the nutrients my body needs, but this juicer is helping me on my way because you can really juice anything like spinach, rather than just fruit.

I hope you enjoyed this post!
I'd love to know if you have any fitness routines?

  1. I love making juice! They always taste so good and a very good for your body. I will need to try these recipes :) And I do agree with you on exercising part, why go to gym when you can do so much more for free? But it's just my view on it :)

  9. I used to drink a lot of soda and juice as well, but eventually started going to water since even juice has a lot of sugar, whether or not you get the ones with high fructose corn syrup. (At least for me, who drank like 8 cups a day). Water IS boring, but I've never juiced! I also thought it was just for spinach and kale and other greens I don't like, but your Sweet Punch sounds really good! If I ever get a juicer... :)

    1. I couldn't believe it either than in terms of sugar content you were no better off than going with fizzy drinks! Haha I don't think I'll ever go down the kale route but juicing is a great alternative, especially when it warms up a bit :)

  14. I've always wanted a juicer, for many many reasons and this one seems like the perfect one for me, but I try not to have more than two pieces of fruit a day because it's still too much sugar, even if natural. And I always need fruit in the morning and before I work out, so I end up not buying because I think I wouldn't use it as much as I wish.

But this is a really love post and I'm certainly gonna be looking forward to seeing more juicing recipes from you!

But I agree, drinking plain water can get a little boring with time, so I drink a lot of herbal infusion.
